North Node Meaning: How to Find Your Life Purpose in Your Birth Chart

The North Node points toward growth. The South Node points to old comfort. Learn how this pair works and what yours says about your path.

Key Astronomical Takeaways

Quick Summary
Key Point 01The North and South Nodes are two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path.
Key Point 02The North Node shows where you grow. The South Node shows your comfort zone.
Key Point 03The nodes spend about 18 months in each sign and return to their start every 18.6 years.

Most of us ask the same big question at some point: “What am I here to do?” Astrology doesn’t hand you a job title. It does offer a compass, though. The North Node is a point in your birth chart, set by the Moon’s orbit, that shows the direction of growth you’re meant to move toward in this life.

SECTION 01

What are the North and South Nodes?

The nodes aren’t planets. They’re math points. They mark the two places where the Moon’s tilted orbit crosses the Sun’s path. Eclipses happen near them, as our eclipse guide explains.

The North Node and South Node always sit exactly opposite each other, 180° apart. If your North Node is in Leo, your South Node is in Aquarius.

In Vedic astrology, these same points are called Rahu (North) and Ketu (South). Ketu also rules the first nakshatra, Ashwini.

What is the difference between the North Node and South Node?

Think of the South Node as your old, comfy sweater. You’re good at it. It feels safe. But you’ve outgrown it.

The North Node is the new jacket you haven’t broken in yet. It feels awkward at first. Yet every time you wear it, life opens up.

The goal isn’t to throw away the South Node. Instead, use its gifts to walk toward the North Node.

The nodes always come in opposite pairs. Find your axis below. The North Node is listed first.

What is a nodal return?

The nodes move backward through the zodiac. They take about 18.6 years to circle all the way around.

So around ages 18 to 19, 37, 56, and 74, the nodes return to where they were at your birth. This is called a nodal return.

Many people find these years mark turning points: leaving home, changing careers, or finding a new sense of purpose.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my North Node?

Enter your birth date into the lunar nodes calculator. The nodes stay in one sign for about 18 months, so the date alone usually works. Add your time to find its house.

Is the North Node my life purpose?

It shows the direction of growth your chart points toward. Many astrologers read it as your soul’s purpose, but it works best as a compass, not a job title.

Why is my South Node so familiar?

The South Node shows natural talents and old habits. It feels easy because you’ve leaned on it for a long time.

What is the difference between true and mean nodes?

The mean node is a smooth average position. The true node shows the Moon’s real, wobbling position. They’re always within about 2° of each other.
