Quick Summary
Key Point 01There are 27 nakshatras. Each one covers 13°20′ of the sky.
Key Point 02Each nakshatra has 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20′, used for baby names and the D9 chart.
Key Point 03Your Moon nakshatra sets the start of your Vimshottari Dasha, a 120-year life timeline.

Western astrology gives you 12 signs. Vedic astrology adds a finer layer: 27 star groups the Moon passes through each month. A nakshatra is one of 27 equal sections of the zodiac in Vedic astrology, each about 13°20′ wide, and your birth nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born.

SECTION 01

What is a nakshatra in simple words?

The Moon takes about 27.3 days to circle the zodiac. So ancient Indian astronomers split its path into 27 “rest stops,” one for each night.

Each stop is a nakshatra. Each one has a name, a symbol, a ruling planet, and a deity.

Because nakshatras are smaller than signs, they give a much sharper reading. Two people with a Cancer Moon can have very different natures if one is in Pushya and the other in Ashlesha.

Nakshatras use the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24° behind the Western one. Our Tropical vs. Sidereal guide explains the gap.

SECTION 02

What are the 27 nakshatras and their rulers?

The nakshatras follow a repeating pattern of nine ruling planets. That pattern repeats three times to make 27.

This matters because your nakshatra ruler becomes your first dasha lord, the planet that runs the opening chapter of your life.

Find your ruling planet below. Each row lists the three nakshatras that share the same ruler and its dasha length.

SECTION 03

What is a nakshatra pada?

Each nakshatra is split into 4 quarters, called padas. Each pada covers 3°20′.

Padas do two jobs. First, each one has a sound, or syllable, used to pick a baby’s name in many Hindu families. Second, padas build the Navamsa (D9) chart, which shows marriage and inner strength.

So when someone says “Rohini pada 2,” they are pointing to one tiny slice of sky only 3°20′ wide.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my nakshatra?

Enter your birth date, time, and city into the nakshatra finder. The Moon moves through a nakshatra in about one day, so the birth time matters.

Is nakshatra the same as Rashi?

No. A Rashi is your Moon sign, one of 12 signs of 30° each. A nakshatra is a smaller 13°20′ section inside or across those signs.

Which nakshatra is the best?

No nakshatra is best or worst. Each has strengths. Some, like Pushya, are seen as good for starting things, but every birth star has its own gifts.

Why does my nakshatra matter for marriage?

Kundli matching uses both partners’ Moon nakshatras to score Tara, Yoni, Gana, and Nadi, which together make up 21 of the 36 points.
